Planet FAQ

Planet Imagery Frequently Asked Questions

1.  What does the Planet Constellation consist of?

Planet operates two fleets of spacecraft: The RapidEye and PlanetScope satellite constellations. The five RapidEye satellites cover a wide area and offer multi-spectral capabilities. PlanetScope satellites are designed to operate in order to continuously collect imagery of Earth’s surface. When fully operational, Planets’ monitoring constellation will yield approximately one complete global image dataset every day.

2. What Products are available from Planet?

Planet provides various imagery, monitoring and elevation products as shown in Table 1 below:

Specific Product

Satellite Imagery

RapidEye Imagery – 5-band (RGB, NIR, and Red Edge) imagery for visual and analytic use.

PlanetScope Imagery  4-band (RGB and NIR) imagery for visual or analytic use.

Monitoring Programs

Planet Monitoring is a customizable, subscription-based program that gives decision makers in any industry the timely imagery they need to make smarter decisions. Whether you’re into environmental management, resource management,
defense and intelligence, market intelligence, or emergency management.

Planet Basemap

Planet Basemaps are spatially-accurate, visually-precise mosaics, making them
an ideal tool for cartographic feature extraction, project planning, tip and cue, and change detection.

Elevation Products

NEXTMap World 30 DSMNEXTMap World 30 offers high value in an economical, comprehensive digital surface model (DSM) for the entire U.S., China, India, Russia, South America, Africa, the Middle East, the Asia Pacific region, and the polar ice caps.

NEXTMap 10 DEM – The NEXTMap World 10 digital elevation model (DEM) provides seamless, best-in-class data to offer both a digital surface model (DSM) and, at long last, a digital terrain model (DTM) for the entire world.
A 10-meter ground sampling distance (GSD) allows for demanding geospatial analyses anywhere on the planet.

3. I have an AOI covering 200 sq.km, can I get RapidEye satellite image over the area?

Yes. Although the minimum order size for ordering the RapidEye image is 500 sq.km for archive imagery and 3,500 sq.km for new imagery. The area of interest will therefore be increased to 500 sq.km.

4. In what projection and datum are imagery products delivered?

Imagery is delivered in Geographic Coordinate system and WGS84 Datum.

5. What are the types of Monitoring Programs that Planet has?

  • Targeted Monitoring- This is ideal for energy, mining, finance, critical infrastructure for power or transport, monitor many areas of interests simultaneously.
  • Broad Area Monitoring- Monitor broad areas such as agriculture and forestry to coastal or wetlands at the frequency you need.
  • National and International Monitoring– Get frequent visibility into key areas of interest at a national or global scale. Solutions for civil and federal government departments, defense and intelligence.

6. Does Planet provide Real Time imagery?

No. Planet Provides Near-Real time imagery since the images are processed and delivered daily, this allows you to see the changes.

7. How long will it take to receive the imagery?

It depends on the product and where the area of interest is located. Archive imagery is usually shipped within 10 working days. For new collection orders it depends on the parameters provided by the client but, usually not more than 60 days.

Currently, the images can be delivered daily to the client through the Planet API. These images include the PlanetScope images and RapidEye images.

8. Is technical support available from Planet once I receive my order?

Oakar Services has a technical support team dedicated to troubleshooting and resolving any data issues.

9. What do you need to place an order?

  • Area of Interest (AOI) defined by bounding coordinates, KML or by a Shapefile;
  • Type of product i.e. Basic product Level1B, Ortho product Level3A, Ortho product Level3B, RapidEye Mosaic, PlanetScope Scenes, PlanetScope Mosaics; and
  • Type of imagery i.e. Archived (specify date of collection) or New Imagery.

10. What is Planet Basemap?

Planet Basemap consists of multiple RapidEye image takes that have been orthorectified and radiometrically color balanced to a uniform appearance that are then assembled to create a single, seamless large area image. This product is designed for a wide variety of applications that require background imagery with an accurate geolocation and a uniform appearance with minimal clouds.

The Basemap product has the following specifications:

  • Three-band, true color (RGB);
  • Image bit depth of 8-bit;
  • Five (5) meter pixel spacing;
  • Cloud-free (less than 3 % cloud cover, some areas excluded);
  • Images geometrically aligned and radiometrically balanced to one another;
  • Positional accuracy of 15 m RMS or better (25 m CE90 or better);
  • UTM, WGS84 projection; and
  • Delivered in GeoTiFF format.
