Planet Labs PBC has successfully launched its high-resolution Pelican-2 satellite, marking a significant advancement in Earth observation capabilities. The satellite was deployed in January 14, 2025, via SpaceX’s Transporter-12 Rideshare mission from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.
Key Features of Pelican-2:
- Enhanced Imaging Resolution: Pelican-2 is designed to deliver imagery with up to 40 cm class resolution across six multispectral bands, optimized for cross-sensor analysis.
- On-Orbit Computing: Equipped with NVIDIA’s Jetson platform, the satellite enables on-orbit computing, significantly reducing the time between data capture and delivery to customers.
- Rapid Revisit Capability: The Pelican constellation is engineered to offer increased rapid revisit opportunities, with up to 12 imaging opportunities per day over most of the Earth, and up to 30 per day in mid-latitudes.
Strategic Implications:
The launch of Pelican-2 enhances Planet Labs’ ability to provide timely and detailed Earth imagery, supporting applications in urban planning, infrastructure monitoring, and environmental assessment. This advancement aligns with the growing demand for high-resolution, low-latency geospatial data across various sectors.
